GAB hosted Bicester - the game originally due to be hosted at Bicester, but a premature decision by Bicester's landlords saw their pitch deemed unplayable - on the bottom pitch at the Brake, whilst the 1s were hosting Chippy at the top. Sadly the busy clubhouse wasn't able to enjoy 2 wins as GAB were unable to turn pressure into points, whereas Bicester score 4 long range tries to take home all 5 points.
The first score came after GAB conceded a turn over in the Bicester half - after a couple of passes a long kick ahead bobbled over the GAB try line. Despite Kay's belief that he'd got to the ball first, and the lack of serious celebration from the chasing Bicester players, the referee awarded Bicester the try, and being under the posts, the conversion was easy. 0-7
GAB had periods of good pressure - Aaron Ruazol's darts at the line-out were accurate, as was Rufus Kinsey's work in the air so line out ball was good all game. Marc Grant and Danny Rae made great ground all game through the centres. Some of the pressure saw GAB awarded a kickable pen, but the underfoot conditions saw Alfie Morton put it just wide.
Bicester's next score again came from longer range (0-12) but also did spend quite a bit of time running phases in GAB's 22 with no luck. GAB also failed to take advantage of their own pressure and Half Time came with the score 0-12.
A rousing team talk was undone after the half after Bicester scored shortly after with their best try - well worked and going thru most of the teams pairs of hands before their winger had enough room to run in. (0-17).
Bicester's final score came after a moment of madness in the GAB midfield. After GAB had earned a line out in the Bicester 22, a switch move in midfield broke down, and with the fly half Eynon's pass going to the floor, which the Bicester 13 picked up and went the length to record the bonus point score. Both DotD's came from the same score - GAB for the awful pass, and Bicester to their 15 for missing the con from bang in front (0-22).
GAB again worked their way back into the Bicester 22. This their pressure was rewarded after several phases thru their backs and forwards getting them to a metre, where Ben Otter did the rest, before Alfie Morton added the extras. (7-22)
Both teams had periods of pressure before the game was out, but no further scores came for either team.
It was, as ever with Bicester, an attritional game. Physio Kirsty was kept busy, including for the unfortunate Thomas Spencer whose debut was ended early - a high clear-out only resulting in a GAB penalty, but ended his participation. We wish him well, along with the other bumps and scrapes, ready for our friendly against Chippy 2s on the 2nd Dec.
Tap Social Man of the Match went to Rufus Kinsey for his hard running, constant tackling and line out work.
