GAB 2s, with just the one win, and Didcot 2s still looking for their first stepped out onto the hallowed turf of the Brake looking to kick start their seasons, and it was Didcot who started the brighter - forcing GAB to concede a penalty in the midfield, Didcot called for the tee, but the wind pulled the ball wide. After working themselves back to a similar position, and GAB again infringing, they elected to go for the corner, and GAB kept out the line-out drive, turned the ball over and exited via the boot of Danny Rae - a kick he chased down before putting in one of his statement tackles, a feature of his play that day.
It was GAB's turn to work their way up-field and force the penalty, which Alfie Morton nudged wide, before making amends with 2 well struck pens which was to be all of GAB's reward for a first half mostly played in Didcot's territory. The conditions underfoot, the first game this season where the scrum hasn't been all GAB, and some handling errors (the ball went down a lot from both sides) meant the try line went unbroken.
Half time: 6-0
Gosford initially continued the territorial dominance at the start of the second half and finally got their reward, another strong carry from Ed Clark saw him skittling defenders, and when one finally snagged him he threw an outrageous offload back inside to the supporting Rob Eynon leaving him with a simple run in. Alfie Morton added the extras.
This should have been the point that GAB really kicked up a gear and started to turn dominance to points, but alas the reverse happened and it inspired Didcot who spend the majority of the game in GAB's half from there on in, including vast periods in GAB's 22. Some well time turnovers, front up tackles (including Danny Rae's Dan Hughes Special) and sheer determination saw Didcot repelled and repelled and repelled before the (rather excellent) referee blew time on his whistle.
A great rearguard effort and a first clean sheet for a while for the men in black.
Both our 17 year olds in Aaron Ruazol (with his second win in 6 days against Didcot following our colts 31-19 win) and Ibs Price put themselves about a lot both in defence and attack, but our Tap Social Player of the Match is Danny Rae for leading our defensive efforts from the front - even when on the wing, he was stepping out of the defensive line to make the first hit on tap-and-go pens ahead of the lined up forwards.
