Heat proves too much for scratch Gosford team

Chip Jefferies

The sight of you guns, old stagers, returning injured and regular players taking to the field would have been enough to warm the cockles of the Gosford faithful without the scorchingly unseasonal weather on Saturday. And for 70 minutes at least, there was

Despite GAB showing some attacking promise out wide, the visitors struck first with quick hands putting the full back over in the corner. That spurred Gosford into action and it was centre Club Man of the Year Tim Ellis to the fore, a scintillating break splicing his way through the Bicester defence which he duly converted for a 7-5 lead to the All Blacks. On 25 minutes he bagged his brace of tries, cutting back on the drifting Bicester defence and scampering under the posts, the conversion took Gosford ahead. Five minutes before half time Bicester narrowed the gap with a converted try.

In the second half the visitors started stronger and pressure on the Gosford line led to their fly half going over from close range to retake the lead. Forced to play from deep Gosford showed some adventure, an ambitious passing movement put that man Ellis into space fro a 60 yard dash ahead of the defence, his chip ahead didn't bear fruit but following a subsequent breakdown quick ball was spread right to one of the new boys James Stevenson to score. Ellis converted and Gosford had their noses ahead once more.

Sadly that would be the last of the lead that Gosford would see as two Bicester tries, one of them from Gosford old boy Granville Williams, took the score to 21-29. Again forced to play from deep, the All Blacks made a highway to the Bicester Danger zone, forcing the visitors into giving away a penalty, a quick tap was taken and flanker Andy Schwarz sent scrum half Rich Robbins careering over the line. Tim Ellis converted to bring the home side within a point. Alas that was the last score for Gosford as Bicester proved they had more in the tank, and on the bench and ran in three further tries in the last 10 minutes to seal victory.

Next week Stratfield Brake hosts a Gosford All Blacks VP Day, on offer for the esteemed spectators will hopefully be another feast of running rugby when GAB II host Reading Vikings.
