He earned 59 caps for Wales (22 as captain), selected to tour with the British & Irish Lions twice, and won the 2004 Heineken Cup with Wasps, scoring the winner in the 78th minute. Howley was known as one of Wales' greatest scrum-halves, winning Welsh Player of the Year in 1996 and 1997.
As a coach he started off at Cardiff Blues, before joining Warren Gatland's welsh set up in 2008. He was Attack Coach on 3 Lions tours in 2009 (under Ian McGeechan), 2013 & 2017 (both under Gatland). He was twice caretaker coach of Wales, winning the 2013 6 Nations title, before joining Gatland in the Lions, helping guide the Lions to their first series win since 1997. This was followed by the drawn series in New Zealand in 2017.
